Norland Conservation Area

The Norland Conservation area is one of the most attractive of the twenty six conservation areas in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.  It runs from Norland Road in the west to Portland Road in the east, and from Clarendon Cross in the north to Holland Park Avenue in the south.

The area incorporates a variety of contemporary architectural styles of the mid-19th century, including the listed garden squares of Norland Square and St James’s Gardens, together with what many consider to be one of the prettiest roads in west London, Addison Avenue.  This conservation area is almost purely residential, with Holland Park Avenue providing shopping interest and facilities for locals. There are some notable bars and restaurants in the area, such as Julie’s and Genie’s (both on Portland Road) and The Academy on Princedale Road.

The area in the west around Pottery Lane was used in the early 19th century for making bricks and tiles out of the heavy clay dug in the area. The clay was shaped and fired in a series of brick and tile kilns. The only remaining nineteenth-century tile kiln in London is on Walmer Road.
